Approximately 22% of the bluegill collected in the most recent fish survey were over 6 inches, but none were longer than 8 inches. Black crappie numbers have increased the past few years and were collected at a rate of 30.7 per hour in 2019. The black crappie fishery is relatively young and none were over 10 inches. The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon (aka The Fishing Hole) is a popular park with both locals and visitors. The lagoon is stocked with fry that grow up to provide sport fishing. The fishing hole has a handicapped accessible platform and ramp.

Homer Fishing Tournaments
Standard full days target smaller fish in local waters. Extended charters go after the big “barn doors” farther away. Bear in mind that, by law, you can’t catch Halibut on Wednesdays, or on Tuesdays mid-July through mid-August.

Halibut Cove Lagoon
Expect the Spit area to be crowded, but there are a good number of places to eat. Expect processing and shipping of fish to be about $7.50 a pound. I met a few fishermen in Seward that were unsuccessful so I am glad I drove to Homer. For the nonfisher people in your party consider booking in advance a flight from Homer to Katnai to see the bears catch salmon. My wife was disappointed that all flights to Katnai were full. Lingcod season is open, and anglers rush offshore to bag some delicious deep-water food fish.
If you’re a family with kids, make sure that the captain you’re considering is good with that; some skippers are more kid-friendly than others. If you’re a small party filling out a “six pack,” realize that if the other folks on your boat aren’t done, you’ll be fishing until they are. Halibut closes for harvest on Tuesdays from mid-July, as well as the year-wide Wednesday closure. Homer's summer fishing season is in full swing, and boy, are you in for a treat.
